There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable kit
As we fold into the autumn, the cooler nights allowing for great sleep and beauty of the early morning mist hanging over the paddock, or the floodlit training in the evenings, this is one of the truly awesome times of the year to be outside, its also vital for our physical and mental health, to get plenty of winter sun, fresh air, nature and social interactions here is an article on how running is as effective as antidepressants. However it was Alfred Wainwright who wrote “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing” in his 1973 book Coast to Coast. There are very few groups of people this applies to quite as singularly and pertinently as us at One Element.

FOOTWEAR
This is the most important thing to get right, from reduced risks of slipping and injury, to increased confidence and the ability to change direction, accelerate and stop on and sixpence, it is dramatic how much difference ‘grip’ will afford you and it needn’t cost a lot.
I would always encourage you to get football boots for the winter. Boots with ‘moldies’ and ‘blades’ studs are perfect while bigger screw-in studs can cause damage to the park which we’d like to avoid. When we think about footwear we think about “support” for the sole of the foot, however this is far less important on the soft ground of the winter park and here you can go cheap provided they are comfortable. Try them on, make sure the heel and
support around the back of the ankle and your achilles is not too firm.

INOV8 X-TALON 212V2 TRAIL RUNNING SHOES
Many members go for these Inov-8 trail shoes, from £70. They’re comfy, have good grip, are light and available with narrower fits. These will also be perfect for when the ground is frozen/hard and can be used in the summer and winter.
MERREL DEVERTA 3 SPORT HIKING SHOES

ADIDAS KAISER FIRM GROUND FOOTBALL BOOTS
I wear these Adidas boots, from £85, five times a week during the winter and at least once a week during the summer. I train and play rugby in them and they are wonderfully comfortable from the moment you put them on. They are durable and typically last me two years a pair.
CHEAP FOOTBALL BOOTS
Decathlon and SportsDirect have a great range of boots available from £15-£20 which are perfect for winter training. Remember to clean them and dry them between sessions to keep them in tip-top condition and they will generally last 1-2 winters. TOP TIP for those with small feet, check out the children’s range for similar quality boots at a slight lower price.
