The Goldilocks time to train
Not too hot, not too cold, just right. The best fitness training is outside in the park in late summer and autumn. Here’s why…
These months in the late summer and autumn, where the light seems crisper and brighter, the air cleaner, the sunrises and sunsets align with training, group fitness in the parks are a privilege and joy at this time of year; everything has had a drink, the grass is thick, green and lush and a mist often hangs over the morning sessions. Geese migrating overhead, spider webs covered in dew. Magical.
For many of us there is an echo of pre-season training or going back to school that drives us on, or perhaps it is a playful summer with some excesses… That internal pull to get back to a rhythm, to clean the system out, to improve the heart and lungs but above all clear the mind. Whatever your reasons, these next two months are a privilege to be outside, with friends in fresh cool conditions.
To quote a recent article in The Times “Wind and the elements provide a natural resistance that the body must work against,” says John Brewer, professor of sport and exercise science at the University of Suffolk. “And changes in terrain from mud and grass to hills, will mean you work a greater range of muscle groups, including those in your core and around the ankles to keep you upright.” Despite this, Brewer says an outdoor workout might seem easier in autumn than in summer. “Studies show that people perceive exercise in warm weather to be harder than on a typical autumn or winter’s day” he says.
One of the secrets to making change and developing long term habits is to change your environment and embrace your natural inclinations to do positive things, People who appear very disciplined have worked out this trick, they create a world around them with less temptation and surround themselves with people who have a similar mindset. from having a bowl of fruit on the table to putting your trainers next to the front door. From enjoying the majesty of the park in the autumn to finding a group of supportive, friendly members and trainers to exercise with.
